A tracking stick is a walking stick with tracks wood burned onto the stick ( your choice of tracks) and 3 or 4 o-rings that are moveable up and down the stick. A tracking stick is used as an aid to following a track, in the dirt and across grass. It helps you follow the tracks and is a great learning tool. In addition, it is a great item to have your walking stick designed around. The concept is simple; you have moveable bands that you slide up and down the stick to measure track length, track width, and track stride (you can also measure straddle and true pitch). So you lay the walking/tracking stick tip to the tip of the original track, and adjust the band to the back of the track. This records the length. Then from that band you slide another band to measure the width of the track. Then lay the end of the stick to the heel of the left track, and adjust another band to the to heel of the right track. This is the stride. So you can lay the end of the stick to the back of the first track and then the band should be near the rear of the next track. Swing the stick in a bit of an arc to locate the second track. The track may be subtle, such as bent grass or an easily seen depression in the dirt. Use the other measurements to profile the new track.
